The Morven Summer Institute offers undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to receive 3 course credits over an intensive 10-day period. Along with time spent in the classroom at Morven, this interdisciplinary program features guest speakers, field trips, active group discussions, and hands-on projects to ignite creative collaboration among students and faculty.

UVA’s First Year Leadership Experience program rocks the garden!

We have been delighted to have students from UVA’s First Year Leadership experience (FYLE) group come volunteer in the garden at times over the last two years. This time they sent two LARGE groups over on a Saturday and did some HUGE work in the garden. Check out some photos to the right and look at what they did through time lapse video under the “Video” section of the website.

Part-time flower farm and landscaping job opportunity

The following job opening was emailed to me yesterday afternoon. If interested, please respond directly to Ms. Hannigan.

I have a small flower farm and also a landscaping business. The farm job would be part time 3 mornings a week. If the perfect person wants more hours, I can bring them to landscaping jobs. Pay at the farm starts at $7.50/hr for the first two weeks, which is a two week trial basis. After, that pay will be $8/hr. Somebody with a lot of experience or horticultural knowledge can earn more.

God Save the Queen’s Willow Oaks!

God Save the Queen’s Willow Oaks!!

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip planted two young Willow Oak trees at Piedmont Virginia Community College in 1976 during their visit to celebrate the United States’ Bicentennial. Twenty seven years later, those two historic trees will get a precision haircut by local experts as part of an Arbor Day volunteer service event.

ISA Certified Arborist Mike Neal and his Arboristry® Associates team will work from the company’s bright blue bucket truck to trim and clear unhealthy branches off these historic Willow Oaks trees. The public and media are invited to interact with the trained technicians on Friday, April 26th, from 9:00 – noon at the Stultz Center for Business and Career Development, located at the entrance PVCC’s Charlottesville campus. Arboristry® Associates will also host educational displays and hands-on demonstrations.

Seed Sowing event

Our seeds have been growing in seed trays throughout PVCC and we’re readying for spring planting. Two of our beds have had seeds directly sown and those tender plants are emerging, sped by our recent days of balmy weather. We’re preparing to transplant our seeds on Friday, April 26th at 3:00 and welcome all volunteers!

UVA’s First Year Leadership Experience – in the garden

Another program that has been regularly appearing in the garden this year has been UVA’s First Year Leadership. Groups of these students have been coming on Saturdays, regularly. As I understand it, this program is for students at the University of Virginia who want to become involved in self governance. After discussions with Priya Vithani and Miranda Hogan, groups of motivated and enthusiastic have been traipsing through.

This past Saturday, for instance, I was out working in the garden when the CTS #1 bus pulled up short of the usual Dickinson Building stop and unloaded about 15 passengers who came marching over in a colorful and noisy cohort to the garden gate. All were First Year Leadership students, but three of them were returning visitors, and almost immediately they had three teams going. Very nice leadership! One group went to work digging and enlarging our perennial beds along the border fence, a second group began stabilizing our nascent greenhouse structure, and the third one began turning over our last unprepared garden bed, readying it for spring planting.

It was just another awesome day in the garden and our thanks go out to all the help from FYLE! We hope to see more of you again the spring, especially so that you can see the results of your labors. A few pictures showcasing these most excellent visitors to our garden have just been added. Please check them out!
